What Are Dental Implants?

March 4, 2016

If you have lost a single tooth, several consecutive teeth on the same arch, or all of your natural teeth, you may be a good candidate to receive dental implants at Discovery Dental. Because the procedure is newer than some others in the field of dentistry, many patients want to know “What are dental implants?” before they agree to get one.

Benefits of Choosing Dental Implants

Dental implants are a permanent way to replace missing or damaged teeth. They have many benefits, such as:

  • Improving oral health
  • Helping to preserve the teeth remaining in the mouth
  • Improving the appearance of your smile
  • The ability to chew your food with confidence knowing the implants won’t slip out of place
  • Your replacement teeth match the shape and color shade of your existing teeth for a more natural appearance
  • Dental implants give you a stronger bite

How Dr. Vanama Installs Dental Implants

Before you can receive your new replacement teeth, Dr. Vanama screws a tiny titanium screw into your jaw where your tooth once sat. Depending on how many teeth you are missing, you may need to wait from several weeks to a few months for the area to heal before she can proceed with the next part of the dental implant process. We can provide you with removable dentures in the meantime if you wish.

At your second appointment, Dr. Vanama inspects the area where she inserted the screw to make sure that it healed as expected. She then attaches the replacement tooth to the rod and secures it in place. The staff at Discovery Dental performs several different types of dental implants based on the patient’s needs. Regardless of the type you eventually get, Dr. Vanama uses 3D scanning technology to determine the location of your jawbone to ensure the correct placement of your new dental implant.
